Title: MSPA Thread
Post by: Jango on January 07, 2011, 01:45:52 AM
I figure Spam Thread's been getting enough MSPA rants from me/UHMEEEEBA/whoever so I'm going to start a new thread about it.

First item of the day, Jade Shirt is out. But fuck that. The Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff T-Shirt (http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TO&Product_Code=MSPA-SBAHJ-BLACK&Category_Code=MSPA) is getting a second run. And just to fuck with everyone who bought it the first run (as I did), they REPRINTED IT SO THAT IT ACTUALLY GLOWNS IN THE DARK (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/sweetbroandhellajeff/?cid=021.gif). Now I have to buy the black one this time around for the complete effect.

That's not so bad. I breezed through Problem Sleuth in one day, and that shit was confusing as hell to read. At least the storyline is a lot more streamlined here.

EDIT:
Also how the hell is SBaHJ getting updated? Davesprite, who took over for Dave kicked the bucket in Jade: Enter, and I find it hard to believe that Alpha Dave is in the right mindset to even want to make the comic at this point. Although I guess with all the time-hopping, it's already been a few days for him, so I guess he's cooled down.
Also Hussie confirmed new flash animation coming in the next few days. Get ready for WEIRD PLOT SHIT. I bet $10 that Vriska dies

Quote from: Andrew Hussie via the siteEDIT ABOUT SBAHJ SHIRTS:

I mentioned that the second run of them GLOWN IN THE DARK. And that is true! However, the thing is, some of those new shirts got mixed in the the old ones. So I guess if you order one there is still a CHANCE you will get one that doesn't glow in the dark? So really the offer stands as the wild card originally advertised.

I guess if you make a big point of asking topatoco for a glowing one they MAY be able to give you one? It all depends on how much you feel like making guys like KC Green and John Keogh take a shirt into a dark room to verify this. I don't know what else to tell you really.

I normally try not to insult the author of one of my favorite webcomics, but WHAT A DICK

Continuing my STRIFE with Topatoco, I got a response from tech support that they apologized for sending me the wrong one, and that they're sending me a replacement. What makes it worse though is that the person who is personally handling it is none other than KC GREEN (http://gunshowcomic.com/), one of my other favorite webcomics. So while I'm glad we got that straightened out, I'm a bit sad that I had to make a cool webcomic author do it.

Holy shit I can't believe it took three days for him to make a flash that was pretty much made of the last Alterniabound flash. I am being literal here as I opened up the flash and found all the character portraits that aren't even relevant any more (although the characters that actually did something here got facelifts). That and I guess all those Scott Pilgrim-esque sprites took up more time than necessary.
Title: Re: MSPA Thread
Post by: UHMEEEEBA on January 22, 2011, 06:32:47 PM
Alterniabound was in development months in advance behind the scenes, it taking a few days for something this small doesn't seem like that big of deal.

Edit: They also did new mugshot work for all the present characters and completely replaced everybody but Feferi's, that probably took a bit of the art teams time.
It's a reasonable assumption that Sollux is now blind like he said was going to happen. Eridan's wands are "science" powered, which means Hussie was secretly planning a song reference.
So Tavros is dead, Feferi is dead, Gamzee might die. So who wants to bet Nepeta is next? Hussie seems to be going for the less important trolls.

If you listen to any of the fan VA's for the comic, most of them usually give her proper pronunciation and a low tone of voice, so yeah that is a bit weird. If anything, I always think of Von Fawn's Vriska voice when I read Terezi's dialogue.

Well you see Hussie has effectively written himself into a corner now, when you consider this update (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=004642).

The present timeline (http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline) Hussie has been putting forward needs her to live to that point, which is a couple hours after the present point... unless Karkat spent over two hours moving Sollux.

That's not saying Hussie just can't retcon himself out of this, and has stated he would have no qualms doing regarding timeline stuff. Any way he gets out this mess I doubt he can do it without looking contrived.
Title: Re: MSPA Thread
Post by: Jango on February 03, 2011, 08:14:08 PM
There's really no way he can retcon the story without opening up shitloads of plotholes. If she is dead, then there's all that conversation problem. If it's a doomed timeline, then that opens up a whole other can of worms about doomed timelines being incommunicado with the alpha timeline.

Of course there's the Iced theory wherein Gamzee is just pretending to be her.
Title: Re: MSPA Thread
Post by: UHMEEEEBA on February 03, 2011, 08:31:16 PM
Replayed to look for easter eggs, which by the way you can talk to Equius as Nepeta, might accidentally skip over that and there is a hidden door near the error screen.

But anyways I was doing that but the first time I tried, after the Nepeta grate scene the game started to flip the fuck out and kept restarting the Miracles song until it was a long droning sound and then Equius started walking absurdly fast and got stuck in a wall.

If I can recreate I'm making a video of it because damn it was freaky.
Unless you downloaded the old version, I think you won't be able to get it anymore. I managed to be lucky enough to not run into a single problem in my first runthrough of v1, but in my second after I found the Nic Cage bust (Busts-R-Us in the Homestuck universe?!), Equius then proceeded to STRONGJUMP into the wall of the first room making the rest of AB3 unplayable.
http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/album/strife

Cirno-track-joke aside, this is probably the best album they released so far

EDIT: Apparently after I pointed out on the forums that Heir Conditioning sounds like Cirno's song, a few other comparisons came out. Tensei himself admitted that he was trying to go for a "Touhou Vibe" for John's song, and he basically outright said that Rose's song was inspired (right down to the name) from this track

Another fan went in and said that Jade's song references this

And although the post was deleted one of the administration staff came out and started yelling about how everything should be fine and there's nothing illegal about referencing songs, despite the fact that nobody was complaining about it in the first place since the album is pretty damn good.

I'm glad you brought up YouChewPoop (I mean YouChew because that whole them trying to become a "professional" site thing), because I'd forgotten about it until you decided to drop it into my lap again like some diseased rodent.
QuoteOh dang dude didn't mean to be a good friend or anything. I'll be sure to help you the next time one of my friends decides to stand up for something we both agree with.

Also, I'm assuming being on "good terms" with people means something completely different in your universe, so I'll just try to translate your terminology as best as I can.
QuoteSorry about that. Your claims of white-knighting were so ludicrous that they knocked me out cold for about half a day. Are you sure you know what that means or do you just throw "white-knighting" around like the people that have bastardized the word "epic"? To be honest I chuckled a bit when I read your last reply. Apparently I can't act like a team member even when they're not in the same room as me. Have you ever been on a team? Wait, don't answer that; that was a rhetorical question.

I assume you are attacking because the last foray into your madness was all about attacking us and saying we're unoriginal. So sorry if I'm going to call the duck a duck.

When you attack an album you are attacking that person. Making original works is sharing your creativity with the world. I mean I don't burst into artist houses and say that their paintings look like shit. You are insulting him by insulting his creative property. Nick is just bein a bro since Plaz hasn't seen this
Quote@WarioAkuma
1) I am just saying we are weary of you because of your past escapades and vehement aggressiveness.

2) I didn't say you did. I said this video is the equivalent of me doing that. If you did this to a big named band you'd better expect a lot of people to respond negatively. Just because HS is small doesn't negate an upset base of people.

3) It's a two way street, hombre. We have opinions too. As long as you have a comments section you are giving us the ability to voice them.
Quote@WarioAkuma
1) So after a terrorist attack all of America was looking at who we thought was responsible carefully. This was wrong to you?

2) You are putting it on the internet. You are welcoming everything. No matter how obscure you may be it is still public. I won't waste typing another analogy for you to take literally.

3) We aren't expecting it. Just being voices of the other side.
Quote@WarioAkuma
1) Brash topic aside it was a comparison to what you said. It got your attention, albeit it was an excuse for you not to answer it. I'm not even here to argue I'm just trying to explain why we came here.

2) It's the same thing Nick said earlier. I was linked to it so I decided to respond after seeing it.

3) You are insulting are friend after all. I don't care if you label me as a white knight. I'll wear the name proudly. He deserves to have someone defending him.

Post by: UHMEEEEBA on April 19, 2011, 03:23:52 PM
To be fair Mother 3 (and Earthbound) both sample quite a few old rock songs (and some other things...) so they could be both sampling the same thing, unlikely but possible.

Anways to show I'm not making this up here's some examples, right off hand I can remember the following:

Opening theme samples the Monty Python opening, supposedly I've never heard it. Also a moot point as that song is public domain.

New Age Retro Hippie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxsGX7NDxUY) samples Johnny be Good (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWNykOk2ckE).

Megaton Walk (Dungeon Man's theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60_1qusgsxQ) samples Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise). (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUImpeQG66U&feature=related) Itoi is raging Beatles fan so no surprise there.

Starmen.net had a list once of all the things it does, good luck finding it on that site the layout really needs an updating.

Yeah fuck you Starmen.net here's an Earthbound Wiki link that has them. (http://earthbound.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Musical_Allusions)

Incidentally this is why Nintendo will never release Earthbound on the VC, they could get away with that sort of thing in the 90s if they tried it today there is little doubt they would get sued so they would either lose money through that or the cost of editing the game to a point where they wouldn't be sued. Neither of which are feasible sadly.

Oh and a Mother 3 example this plays when you fight bat enemies.

The first few notes of the intro are from the old 60's Adam West Batman for some bizarre reason.

I thought they were less likely to be sued today and more likely to be sued in the 90s and it was a wonder that they weren't?

Johnny B Good they could probably get away with since that's pretty much a standard staple rock song at this point. As for The Beatles, Nintendo and Paul McCartney have a good relationship last I checked (McCartney is a fan of Kondo, and vice-versa).

However, I'm not sure if Michael Jackson's family is still in control of The Beatles since his death or if they rightfully handed it back to McCartney.

Also formatting ftw.

Actually yes you'd be more likely to get sued today than before because record labels are now much more vicious about it than they were twenty years ago. That and video games are more popular now and thus more likely to be scrutinized.

I'm starting to think Homestuck won't be finished. What with the slowdown on the updates, it almost seems like he's losing interesting in the story he started and he's just doing it for the very profitable fanbase.
on a sidenote, for my top secret Terezi WIP, Eyes5 did ask if she could share the resulting edits with Andrew for an update so maybe it's a buildup to that???
Wouldn't that technically make you part of the art team? You could start a gang war with the music team.

I figure Homestuck will end some day it just will probably end up being rushed. Not doubting though that he's kicking his feet up counting money from the merchandise and music sales though.

I dunno if that makes me "part" of the art team, since I commissioned her and TheOddysean for the project, although on occasion (ie: during the MSPA IS SO INSPIRED vid) some art team members step forward and defended my position during my flamewar with Radiation and Tensei.

Oh yeah now I'm reminded that I have to get my VA to redub some of her lines.

And also to check on *censored2*'s progress on the new theme song we're composing for her.

T-reich: nope, even better

Terezi Pyrope for Mugen with spritework by some of the art team and Rolento (!!!), voice acting from my favorite Terezi VA, and a song to go with her from a non-sucky member of the sound team.

Jmorphman: yeah, well since im doing a conversion of her, she needs a song for when she's picked in MUGEN, and that wouldnt work at all. And yeah I just dislike Radiation's work in general, and all the good songs he did are remixes of existing stuff that still sound better in the original form.

Im gonna keep that one under wraps for now although she's been involved in a few other VA projects for Terezi. I will tell you it's not Von Fawn.

EDIT: just to clarify, Von Fawn has VA'ed Terezi and Vriska, and while her Vriska is awesome, her Terezi sounds a bit too old for what I had in mind.

Doesnt mean she's ruled out of a potential project down the road if I have stamina after this one.

I think this a good attitude for authors; you shouldn't grow so attached to your creations that you can't kill them off when the story calls for it.

Then again I came to this point of view via Yoshiyuki Tomino and Joss Whedon, and I know that not everyone likes the way they so carelessly off their characters.

As of now the only alternate timelines that are canon are:

1) The timeline where Terezi tricks John into offing himself, which creates Alternate Future Dave and Davesprite
2) The timeline where Gamzee goes insane before SGrub, kills all the other trolls, and writes the "honk HONK" code, which was combined with the "t1ck t0ck" and "8r8k h34ds" codes to make Doc Scratch.

Long story short...

I dont even need to criticize the sound quality (plus my phone wont play it), just the fact that he named one charafter after a pararox and another after an old INTERNET MEME is enough to say the album will suck, and that Toby Radiation was wrong in how similar their humor is to Hussie's. Even Zapp Rowsdower is a better name than those two.

Hell I'll up the stakes and make up two pun-based names that are better than those off the top of my head: Dora Bachs and Amy Taba.

See? Same concept, no bullshit. Those are still terrible but theyre infinitely better than... Hadron Kaleido... ugh

No seriously, take a step back and look. the death rate is so frequent and cheap, that I cant even read it with morbid curiosity.

take also into account that the update rate the site is FAMOUS FOR is slowing with subpar updates, and that more and more products are coming out. The comic stopped being a unique story and started milking the name for what it's worth. Hell I am confident he doesnt care about telling a compelling or even COHERENT story any more. As long as he's got gullible fans that will buy the t-shirts (dont get me started on that though), and gullible "team" members who volunteer their time for something he makes a profit on that they do not receive any payment for (hence the art team tip jar), he doesnt need to worry about making a good story at all.

On a sidenote, the artist I hired is asking for more time because *censored* has other urgent projects atm. Hopefully it's not one of Hussie's projects because if so, that means that volunteer work from an e-celebrity takes priority over a paying customer from four months ago. >:(

The update schedule has always been erratic. But it usually outpaces that of other webcomics. And I don't think these updates are subpar.

Editing quotes on this phone is clumsy as hell so I shall instead number my responses.

1. when you have 16+ characters fighting for screen time, its hard to get attached, especially if they start getting systematically killed.

2. lately these updates are BOOM death then BOOM death then BOOM Dr. Scratch being cryptic, and we'll find out that Hussie has been keeping a secret about some secret power or afterlife or whatever which most convential writers will tell you is a bad way to tell a story.

3. as I said up there, the story hinges on misinformation and convenient new plot devices popping up.

4. selling a t-shirt like his last two SBAHJ shirts is terrible. Same thing with the albums.

additionally, the what pumpkin store has gotten complaints about customers ordering stuff and Hussie and co not sending the orders and just pocketing the money until they get a complaint. mostly international orders and the like, but still...

This latest development showed that what happens in one alt will inevitably happen in another timeline as well, which contradicts the alt timeline Davesprite is from. Jade died in that timeline, and as it was shown, it is impossible for her to die under these circumstances for a multitude of reasons:

1. Noir is incapable of killing her due to the Bec prototyping
2. Draconian Dignitary is too busy being a puppet ruler on Derse to kill her and has no desire to do so.
3. Courtyard Droll switched allegiances and for the most part is an idiot.
4. Possibly misleading but as of now, she will survive long enough to beget a child who will beget her grandson who will send Liv Tyler and the weapons back to John.

Tl;dr, whoops plothole

Btw if you were think of buying Mobius Trip and Hadron Kaleido, have a gander at this question from Bowman's Page, from a random question on the forums:

QuoteAre there any intentional song similarities or specific inspirations, musically? Chain of Prospit reminds me a LOT of She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby, in a very good way.

None of the songs are supposed to sound intentionally like any other song, but my style is informed by the groups I've listened to that I really enjoy. I can see the resemblance, but when I listen to my own music I always hear a demolition derby of every song I've ever liked. All the things I've seen posted about my music being a mix between groups like Daft Punk, David Bowie, or They Might Be Giants really satisfy me because those are most of the same things I listen to.

I think I listened to "She Blinded Me With Science" a lot about five years ago. Thomas Dolby is a cool guy. I really like his soundtrack to Gate to the Mind's Eye.

Shine on you crazy diamonds.

What is unreasonable about that? That seems like common sense.

If it was a solo project by Radiation, as he makes the most money, it would be likely for him to forget to do an album since he's the most profitting member of the group. Your post is irrelevant to ky argument so phooey on you

Also I don't have the URL but on youtube apparently someone from the sound team made a parody of my video wherein I accuse them of being talentless hacks about a week ago. I dunno if I should be impressed that even after a 1+ month hiatus on my part that they're still bitching about it, or if I should be annoyed that they see no problem with their work ethic.

To put it in perspective, MC Chris is legally not allowed to make ANY profits for his "Life's a Bitch and I'm Her Pimp" album because it samples a comedian's standup routine in one song ("Fucking Up My Christmas," btw). It is only obtainable as mp3 downloads and printable album art. Then you see these chuckleheads putting in entire monologues from Dr. Who and sampling Hank Hill and Cyclops' voice for a song YOU MUST TO PAY TO GET, and no one sees a problem at all.

I almost want to learn how to arrange my own music and make a Homestuck tribute album just to spite them. I actually have a few concepts down for the (not) coming (anytime) soon fullgame SBurb Beat: First Crescendo, where each character's theme follows a theme from a different game (ie: John having a simple yet strong theme like in SF2, Vriska with a GGXX Korean Soundtrack vibe, and Nepeta's theme being a vocal song in the same vein as a Matrimelee song).

God I hate being an idea engineer with a broken computer and no idea how to arrange this shit.

I like how he ignores the fact that each page uploaded on average doesn't constitute as a full srandalone strip, and therefore the whole "longest-running-webcomic" thing is irrelevant. Watch him shut down this formspring like the time he fucked up the album art on Vol.6 and compared himself to Picasso when he got called out on it.

That reminds me, I meant to post this a few days back.

QuoteSennoma says (7:30 PM):
So I've been thinking. In "disc one" Homestuck presented an "interesting" story presently mostly visually with the occasional pesterlog.

Sennoma says (7:32 PM):
While that continues early in "disc two" the past few weeks of updates have shown an increased use of expository text dumps with visuals now taking a backseat.

UHMEEEEBA says (7:33 PM):
Are you going somewhere with this?

Sennoma says (7:33 PM):
Homestuck is the Xenogears of webcomics.

UHMEEEEBA says (7:34 PM):
... in terms of pacing yeah I guess you're right.

No, it was during the convo between Gamzee and Tavros. So it looked like Hussie actually gave up on the visuals when he did the first page of that update.

So I was wearing my John t-shirt and I was at mcdonald's and this shrimpy highschooler ran up to me and he's like "WOAH IS THAT THE JOHN SHIRT?!" So I was shocked, and was like, "Ah, a fellow Homestuck fan!" Then he said, "But wait, when was John's shirt black?" And I go "oh, remember when Vriska made John alchemize an outfit like hers?" And he goes, "Why are John and Vriska talking?!" At this point I asked where he was, and he told me he just started Act 5.

Whoops.

Not MSPA related directly, but longtime art team contributor (that Hussie tends to credit the most, and who tends to be his mouthpiece on occasion) is working with the dudes from Penny Arcade in doing art for a TCG that's coming out (http://penny-arcade.com/2011/08/19/paint-the-line-card-game). Hopefully this means she wastes less time getting her art front and center in the flashes (while she's a great artist, her stuff clashes, although not as bad as Tynic's BUT STILL) and giving me warnings for referencing Samurai Fantasy on the forums.

Yup, no Lexxy here in this flash. Am I the only one irked about Laz's portrayal of Gamzee here, that it looks too relaxed?

STAND BACK TIME FOR MUSIC RANT TIME

Since I haven't listened to an album since Medium, this is my first time hearing something from Vol. 7 and OH GOD JIT WHAT DID YOU DO I LOVED YOU AND YOU MADE THIS PIECE OF SHI-actually it's alright but it should NOT have been used in this flash. As it is, all the recent flashes are reusing shit that's been reused for the last two years, and in this case it's barely relevant to John's kernelsprite (well except for the bit about Gamzee sticking the voodoo doll into John's nightmares in the past, giving him his fear of harlequins, which the dad interprets as interest and gives him the giant Harlequin doll that he puts in the kernelsprite. But that would be like Vega getting a remix of Cammy's theme song when fighting Ryu).

PLEASE DO SOMETHING NEW! SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

So I was paying my kid bro (he's 9) a visit, today. I show him the flash animations from Homestuck sometimes, so he's kinda familiar with the story. So I walk in and I ask him how his day at school was, and he said he fell down a staircase. I got all freaked out and asked if he was alright, and he goes, "Yeah, but now I remember... you DID warn me about the stairs, bro!"

Posted on Guild, but Lexxy has take it upon herself to start a petition on Gaia Online to remove the candy corn horns from the store: http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/petitions/remove-homestuck-items-700-signatures-op-edited-11-20/t.76030935_1/

Some funny highlights if you don't want to read:

1) Some Gaia posters are claiming Hussie ripped off Gaia Online because the candy corn horns have been available since 2008 (although some newer ones resemble the current trolls, and apparently one of the shopkeepers cosplays as Eridan as an easter egg)

2) There were emotes in the shape of the kids' symbols, as well as astrology symbols with the trolls' colors, but they have since been removed.

3) Some homestuck fans are trying to get Hussie to sue, while Hussie is trying to keep it a low-key grass roots thing (his words), while everyone on Gaia says the reason he wants it like this is to avoid drawing attention to copyrighted stuff he's used in the comic jokingly (ie: Betty Crocker, all the movie posters, etc etc)

4) Believe it or not, Bowman actually purchased the rights to make a cover of "How Do I Live," which was apparently several hundred dollars. So far no comment on "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing," though.

I love whoever did this thread and I am thankful there are quiet, calm Homestuck fans that don't foam at the mouth at the slightest provocation.

EDIT: Welp, Lexxy apparently LIED TO EVERYONE and in the edited tumblr post, the goal was for her to get contact information for Gaia staff to allow Hussie to communicate with them. So everyone that "signed" is in for a rude awakening.

So the petition ruse was a... distaction?
Title: Re: MSPA Thread
Post by: Jango on November 21, 2011, 01:45:51 PM
they HAVE the e-mail. Or at least they think they do, Lexxy is apparently checking for its credibility.

Also as one poster put it, it doesn't benefit either party to take legal action. If Gaia Online sets up a dialogue with Hussie, it will confirm that they did indeed infringe copyrights and Hussie will have legal ammo against them. If Hussie decides to sue, the possible compensation he would get for damages would not be enough to cover the legal expenses needed for the case, and since his site's expenses are ridiculously high (The EOA5 animation costs Newgrounds several thousand dollars a day to host alone), it's pretty much not worth it. So despite what Lexxy is saying, the best course of action is for Hussie and Gaia to not do anything.

Not like that will stop the fanbases from yelling about it though.

UPDATE: 135 Pages later, someone asked Lexxy if Hussie & Co. sent a DMCA as outlined on the damn site (http://www.gaiaonline.com/info/legal/dmca). Lexxy is like "THAT EXISTS?!" rendering the whole public support thing useless.

UPDATE2: A Gaia admin said they are currently "looking into it." So much for a Seppucrow kernelsprite egg all over the collective Homestuck fantards' faces.

Suddenly it dawns on me that there's about two years worth of Homestuck on the horizon. My main argument being that Disc Two was inserted near the end of Act 5 which took more than two years to tell.

Hussie is just fucking with us at this point.

"Disc two" might be shorter than disc one, sometimes that happened in older multi-disc games where the game almost could have fit on one but couldn't quite.

As long as we don't end up with all the characters sitting in chairs and expositing the plot to us we'll probably be good.

Jane Crocker's wikia page keeps getting vandalized (http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Jane_Crocker). Here were some of the better ones:

- Jane's quote read "somebody call 911 shawty fire burning on the dance flo-woah."
- Age was 933 (in Negronian years)
- One of the picture subitles was "GOTTA GET DAT BOOM BOOM BOOM"
- Her biography mentioned that she enjoyed getting violated by black men.
- People keep throwing in various rap song lyrics into the wiki.

Quote from: Hussie on the web siteYou might have noticed I've scaled back the frequency of music releases somewhat. It was becoming sort of intense getting one or more albums ready for release every month. It also did start to feel like maybe just a little bit too much music coming at you all the time. I'd like to make sure the novelty of these doesn't deteriorate too quickly. Hence a single release seemed like a nice way to mix it up for now. I would expect albums to come out closer to every two months from now on.

Translation: Everything the sound team has been shitting out lately has been bad and people aren't buying the albums no more, so I'll give them more time so they don't have to resort to remixing Doctor/Sburban Jungle/Anything from Alternia.

This is excellent news for me and I hope the artists can bring the music quality back to its former glory.

Just posting to say Roxy blacking out and the site forwarding you to a protest against SOPA/PIPA was awesome

EDIT: Unrelated but on Martin Luther King Day, some folks called Hussie out on being racist, he denied it, someone pointed out that John called Bro a "lame white rapper" at one point, so Hussie retconned the chatlog in question (IIRC the only retcon he's done sincr EOA4) and wrote a giant tl;dr about the issue (actually he devoted THREE posts, but two of 'em came before the retcon). Don't have the back-and-forths, just Hussie's word.

So people were complaining about Hussie being racist with the above post's update, so he went ahead and indulged them by making Jane shout that she felt SO CAUCASIAN.

That lead to people on Tumblr throwing a shitfest. Here's one of 'em (http://spiderlass.tumblr.com/post/40360360530/why-the-homestuck-update-was-racist), and here's a notable quote if you don't want to read all of that.

QuoteI have a friend that is pale-skinned latina, and she was upset and confused about the update. Jane could've been that skin colour and not white, she could've been Asian or Latina or mixed - why does being "pantone 7507c" mean she's "Caucasian"? One of my favourite bloggers was harassed so much that she shut off her ask and is done with Homestuck because of how unsafe it's made her feel. She's black, by the way.

So eventually Hussie went back and edited the comic to say "Peachy" instead of "Caucasian," and changed the hex color slots into fruits.

Title: Re: MSPA Thread
Post by: Jango on January 14, 2013, 10:44:03 PM
www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=007611 (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=007611)

Basically people were bitching about how all the humans in the comic are white. Hussie went on record saying they merely weren't colored and he didn't want to make anyone any particular race. It started a bunch of unofficial race profiles (ie: John being Japanese, Rose being Black, etc). Then in this update, people got mad because he specifically colored Jane in to have a "white" skin tone, and she called attention to it.

This isn't the first time he's had this problem before, but it's probably had one of the larger backlashes.
- After announcing he didn't officially give anyone a race, somebody brought up early on in the comic that John calls Dave's bro a "white rapper." That got edited out after a bunch of flame wars.
- John and Jade's ancestors were mentioned to be southerners. Still says that.
- Karkat says that the Beta kid babies and their parents are "pink."
- Earth gets destroyed, and people accuse Hussie of racial purification. He jokes that his intention was to kill all the fat people.
