Title: Donkey Kong Country Returns
Post by: UHMEEEEBA on September 22, 2010, 07:24:43 PM
Apparently I never made a thread for this game. I'm shocked too.

Anyways new trailer, Rambi is back.

I think it's actually starting to look good now.

I'm still a bit disappointed about no Kremlings and various other changes but I've changed my mindset of expecting a sequel to expecting a series reboot and I'm more ok with it now.

Because Nintendo has never reused enemies from one series in another.

A new Nintendo Power came out with some new information, mainly that Cranky Kong is back (http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4452/e217cb2f43.jpg) (and if past rumors are to be true he is the only other returning Kong character), he is now a shop keep.

Other things of note:
Squawks the parrot is chilling in Cranky's shop.
Six worlds but with more in them than the old games. Also they now have alternate paths like in Super Mario World.
Claims it will be as difficult as the SNES trilogy.
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns
Post by: Jesuszilla on October 23, 2010, 05:59:01 PM
It doesn't look as difficult as the SNES trilogy. That's the main problem people have with it.

Another trailer. Game is said to have 70ish levels on its homepage, which is more levels than the SNES ones had.

Edit: Also corrupt, adulterating shitbags's impressions. (http://corrupt, adulterating shitbags.com/5675560/50-deaths-in-donkey-kong-country-returns-in-one-sitting) Claim the game is a bit harder than people are giving it credit for.

Double Edit: IGN's impressions (http://wii.ign.com/articles/113/1130930p1.html). They confirm a remix of Aquatic Ambiance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVrorgoCrKU) from the first Donkey Kong Country will be in the game. Oh my.

3 minutes of Gameplay footage, also confirms a remixes of Voice of the temple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah0d1asVhMQ), Minecart Madness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2y12kv-n-o&feature=related) and oddly a remix of Notheren Hemispheres (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6NpliDiLTE&feature=related) that plays on a stage with no snow.

Somethings from DKC2 or 3 would be nice Retro. PLEEEEEEEEEEASE?

Also holy shit giant wall of death spiders.

Blimp theme or bust.

Just avoid the DKL boss theme as Rare sort of owns that what with them reusing it in Blast Corps.

Some videos from IGN.

Very minimalistic music on this one, can't say I like it.

Rhambi doesn't give a fuck when hit anymore and just sort of casually walks around.

Really if all the new music is like this I'm not impressed.

DK's Monkey Spank actually does something now! And what the fuck, pigs? Bring back the star barrels, unless RARE has a patent on that technology too.

But yeah, they need to focus on making some GOOD new tracks, rather than remixes.

The pig shows up in a few other spots, such as being the way to access the super guide apparently. Not saying I like him though.

Scratch that I'm not impressed with the music in general now, they were just choosing the good parts for trailers. Knew they should have brought Wise on this.
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns

Okay, being a former percussionist, I love percussion, but there's a point to where if you use too much of it at too slow a tempo, it's BORING, okay?

Either make it more exciting, or add some more variation in instruments. EVERYTHING BONGO LOL is why we don't remember anything from Donkey Konga or Jungle Beat.

I'm starting to doubt if they really have learned what their mistakes were with the past few games. A good game should have good music. I seriously do not want to play if the music is boring, I don't care how good the gameplay is. Everything counts.

Oh, and your hitsounds fucking suck, change them.

I just hope to god they don't fuck up Aquatic Ambiance. That's one of the best video game songs EVER. Nostalgic, catchy, and beautiful all at the same time.

Though tbh I'm more interested in what the original songs will sound like
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns

From the brief videos I posted the other, like not much of anything if those are a metric of the overall soundtrack.
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns
Post by: Tyrannosaurus Reich on November 11, 2010, 10:47:23 PM
Actually tbh from what I've heard of the soundtrack, it isn't that bad to me.

It isn't AMAZING, but it's decent. I've heard worse music in a video game before.

Some footage of later in the game stuff. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MJXoovV-8k) Since it's later in the game I'm not going to embed it, seriously it has some spoilers if you actually care about those for a DK game.
Factory levels, or at least the one they showed, are NOT using Fear Factory. In fact I think they're using a remix of DK Island Swing (AKA The regular Jungle music). After hearing the Mine Cart Madness remix I can't say I'm at all surprised, they've dropped the ball musical speaking it seems.

Life in the Mines is back though. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkWvxKDgP7Y)

Mr. Game and Watch is in the background of the factory levels for some reason.

As expected from the guy who made the Super Metroid soundtrack, the Volcano music is Norfair-ish. No sign of the DKC2 Volcano theme.

One boss is a chicken riding around in a giant egg mech. Random Sonic reference for no reason?

Final boss is an Andross ripoff. Or to be more accurate, Wham Bam Rock from Kirby Super Star.

Level themes are as follows: Jungle, Beach, Ruins, Caves, Forest, Cliff, Factory, Volcano. And what seems to be a post game area called Golden Temple.
Review embargo lifted, here's IGN's with a 9.0. (http://wii.ign.com/articles/113/1135734p1.html) It's ranging from a 7 in Edge magazine (lol Edge Magazine) to a perfect 10 from Destructoid (http://www.destructoid.com/review-donkey-kong-country-returns-187964.phtml) right now. Edge review not withstanding it's averaging about an 8.5 I would guess.

KONG letters are required for 100 % completion.

This is the bonus level in the first world you can buy from Cranky. Fairly difficult looking for a first world level.

Game is now out just so you know. Some people have already gotten from midnight releases.

A bit late but the Japanese site launched (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/sf8j/index.html). Not much to say besides there being a fairly decent remix (in comparison to the others I've heard anyways) of Forest Frenzy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD5LKnpY-vM&feature=related) (It's #4 on the jukebox). Nintendo's embedding powers are better than Capcoms, can't rip if for you guys sorry. It'll be up on youtube by tomorrow though probably.

It's one of the lines he says in the shop, paraphrased. He also asks you to tell "that Rhino" to visit him among other things randomly.

He has rantings in the instruction book like he did in the ones for DKC 1 and 2 by the way.

There was this one video on Gametrailers which shown some cam footage of the game, and it had some cool original music over it.

I need to find that video, and I hope to god that music is in the game because so far it's leaps and bounds better than most of the remixes in this game.

Well we were both wrong,
you have to collect all the KONG letters in each level in a world (including Cranky's locked one) to unlock the world's respective "K" level (which is on the same map screen, so yeah you can do that video I linked to before even fighting the first boss if you feel like it). Supposedly beating all eight opens up the Golden Temple.
Too nice. It totally takes away from the dark mystery of the sea that the original had.
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns
Post by: UHMEEEEBA on November 22, 2010, 08:30:38 PM
It also plays on a platforming intensive stage on the back of a whale, it doesn't fit.

The game is actually pretty good, I'd recommend at least renting it some time if you liked the old ones. I'm not 100 % done yet but I've got a few complaints I'd like to bitch about.

-Roll is tied to waggle. This is stupid, it's a running attack it just doesn't feel right. Also being waggle it can be ureliable at times which is not good when you're trying to do the roll jump off a cliff. It works fine, I guess, for the other moves that require waggle.

-World 4, the cave level has no platforming in it. All the levels are either mine carts or the rocket barrel levels, fine every now and then and the mine cart levels in general are pretty good and they do mix them up, but the pacing just seems bad.
Got to give Retro credit for making a mine cart boss. It's awesome.
-The music on the whole isn't doing it for me very much but their are some nice arranges here and there (all DKC1 music, nothing from the others). On the plus side the mine cart music gets level specific remixes, hence why the first version had drums in it, that's the jungle mine cart theme. The new stuff is either ok, or barely qualifies as music.

-I don't like the Rocket Barrel, it works but it's just not good. Also strangely while Minecart Madness gets remixes for each world there is only one Rocket Barrel theme...

-As expected the new enemies are painfully generic. Also their grand plot is just... well... stupid.

-Physics on the whole are different than the other DKC games (especially the jumping off enemy ones), takes some getting use to.

-Puzzle pieces unlock art and music and are not required for 100 % completion so really they are just there for the sake of having something to collect. Seems silly.

-Bonus levels can only be attempted once per stage run/life. Further they are all of the "collect items in 30 seconds!" variety.

-Retro claimed they axed swimming to speed the pace of the game up, well the game is pretty dang slow as you stop about every few seconds to ground pound plants or other various things looking for the aforementioned pointless puzzle pieces.

-The cast seems fairly bare boned. Also they don't even bother explaining the pig, it's just there with no explanation. Personally I choose to believe Wrinkly Kong's ghost possessed it.

-I don't think it'd be possible to make a more anti-climatic, generic final boss.

-The lack of other animal helpers seems a bit silly. I can understand not wanting something platforming intensive like Squitter, but they could have brought back Winky or something. Concept art shows they had some ideas for new ones, shame they didn't get used.

-Banana juice is not yellow. You'll understand what I mean when it happens.

And now for some good things to say about it:

-Unlike in some other "co-op" Nintendo platformers, the co-op here works fairly well. Diddy is unbalanced though. The players share lives which helps curtail team killing.

-The game is harder than it looks, do not underestimate it. Time Trial will fucking kick your ass, it's not required for 100 % completion but getting gold medals is very hard.

-The level gimmicks are pretty varied and keep the game fairly fresh without being obnoxious like say Poisonous Pipeline in DKC3. The level design on the whole is pretty good.

-Cranky has some funny lines.

-Some of the boss fights are pretty good.

-It's definitely an improvement on the GC-era Bongo shit, and DK64. I'd say it's a little better than DKC3 but not as good as 2. I don't agree with all of Retro's decisions but I'd rather have this than seeing DK doomed to shitty mini-games.

Well you can find some of the new tracks on youtube, people have been fairly slow in uploading them though. I'm personally not impressed with the music in general and most of the new stuff isn't that good.

There aren't that many new tracks overall though, there's the beach themes, the lava theme, some in the cliff levels, boss themes and rocket barrel theme. Overall they reuse the DKC soundtrack whenever possible even throwing in the snow level music in the cliff world for example.

Looking at the credits there were about five people involved in the music production, I suspect the Super Metroid guy did the lava theme, the final boss theme and then cashed his check.

I went to Gamestop to pick it up as a Christmas present for my bro, and the clerk was raving about it, saying it was one of the best games he's played in years. Then there was another clerk there who was trying to get him back to earth and then it devolved into a Wii VS 360 fight right at the checkstand. Jegus Chris.

It's pretty good, not as good as DKC2 and a bit flawed at times (especially the control scheme) but it's pretty good.

But there's a lot of concept art for some really cool new level ideas they never got around to, a bit disappointing.

I liked DKC3...
Title: Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns
Post by: UHMEEEEBA on November 30, 2010, 10:07:34 PM
DKC3 was a fine game but it sort of foreshadowed Rare's future of having lots of collectibles in their games moreso than DKC2 which had DK Coins (which were technically optional) and the bonus coins, DKC3 added in a bunch of shit for the bear collections, made DK Coins mandatory and introduced Banana Birds.

Also unlike the level gimmicks in the previous two in DKC3 they are not only frequent but a few of them are just obnoxious and bad game design, for instance two words:

Poisonous Pipeline

I still like DKC3 but between that and Rocket Barrel Rush it has some of the most obnoxious one shot rap name levels in any platformer I have ever played. It didn't help I played DKC3 on hard mode* once for 105 % instead of the normal 103 %, but seriously FUCK those levels.

*No star barrels or DK barrels.

DKCR's level gimmicks are pretty good and for the most part are challenging in a legitimate way**, that alone if nothing else makes it a dramatic improvement on DKC3.

**If you are deaf however, one of them will be more annoying than Poisonous Pipeline would ever be.

Hah, I was reading and saw "rap name" and was like "what?" Then I remembered the Vaginasta-esque wordfilter.
For a while, Mugen Infantry censored SyN to "Vagina," so you'd get all sorts of weird things, like synchronize turning into vaginachronize (which was of course VERY appropriate when talking about Type Moon)
